Euro Bus, Coach and Truck

Bus, Coach and Truck power for Europe

With over one million Euro certified engines operating in truck, bus, coach and specialist vehicle applications around the world, Cummins brings a unique level of experience to every engine we manufacture. For vehicle manufacturers it offers a level of application expertise that few, if any, other engine companies can match. For the operator it offers world-class levels of performance. Our European credentials are strongly rooted, based on over 60 years of manufacturing presence and employing over 5,000 employees in Europe.

Going Global

Cummins European designed and manufactured B & L Series engines can be found powering buses in city fleets located far beyond Europe, in applications ranging from compact midi-buses to 3-axle double-deckers. Many thousands of our B & L Series engines meet Euro V or Euro VI equivalent regulations in countries including Australia, China, Mexico, New Zealand, Singapore and UAE. Indeed, Cummins has become the low emissions engine of choice wherever the bus duty-cycle is the most demanding, the climate condition are the most challenging or where fleet uptime goals are the highest. Backed-up by the broadest global service support network in the industry, we work closely with European OEM exporters as well as locally-based bus builders to ensure they succeed.

You can see our global power hard at work in this Hong Kong bus video, with over 4,500 Cummins-powered double-deckers helping to keep the city on the move. Very few major cities present such a challenging duty-cycle as Hong Kong and with our L Series achieving such a leading position in the franchised bus fleets, this video demonstrates just how capable the 8.9-litre engine is by working up to 20 hours a day on not just congested city streets, but also hilly rural routes and high speed expresses accumulating up to 200,000 km per year. Along with the impressive bus fleets, you can also see some great views of the city.

Cummins has earned an unrivalled position as the world’s leading engine platform for city bus applications, ranging from compact midi-buses all the way up to 3-axle double-deckers and articulated buses. Indeed, no other engines power more buses, in more cities, and in more countries worldwide than Cummins - and that’s because no other engine range can offer such high levels of performance and in-service reliability whilst operating under the most challenging duty cycles. The ability to keep delivering under long service hours, very high annual mileages and difficult route terrain comes as standard with every Cummins engine. Innovations such as the Stop/Start system and hybrid configurations have set Cummins technology apart from others.

For applications in Europe and Turkey our engines are certified to the very low emission requirements of the 2019 Euro VI Phase-D standard, introducing nearer-to-zero diesel and natural gas power. Our European engine manufacturing takes place at the Darlington Plant in the UK, co-located with major facilities focused on engine development, application engineering and pilot vehicle installation. So when it comes to powering buses in Europe and for export worldwide, no other engine company has access to more resources, experience or capability. That’s why Cummins-powered buses can be found operating from Belfast to Berlin, and from Stockholm to Istanbul – or exported to work in cities from Mexico City to Hong Kong.

Cummins Euro VI Phase-D power for coach applications spans one of the broadest in the industry, extending from a mini-coach to full size 3-axle touring coach and includes the latest ultra-clean hybrid and natural gas solutions. Specific coach engine ratings release the full potential of the Cummins 2.8-litre to 12-litre engines for shuttle services, day touring, intercity and commuter routes, as well as premium long distance touring.

The same attributes that have established the B6.7 as the leading mid-range engine for city buses have proved equally applicable to the growing market for midi-sized coaches, with less than 11 metre length and with up to 40 seats capacity. The exceptional power density of the 6.7-litre makes it the engine of choice for this highly cost-effective coach class. Fuel and CO2 reductions are even more impressive with a new generation of coaches with up to 13 metre length utilising Cummins B6.7-H hybrid engine. This design meets the need for shorter distance commuter, suburban or school transport operating through low emission zones.

The L9 engine offers a highly productive power solution for high-deck 12-metre coaches focused on cost-effective versatility, but achieves this while delivering rapid acceleration and high cruising speeds. New to the coach market is the L9N natural gas engine bringing the option of close-to-zero emissions with diesel-like performance. For premium, full size coaches the X12 is newly introduced for Euro VI with an innovative weight-saving design and fuel-saving XPI extra high pressure injection system, combined with all the robust durability expected of a Cummins heavy-duty engine.

For smaller coaches, the compact F3.8 or B4.5 is an ideal power source, bringing the operational cost saving of a high efficiency 4-cylinder engine, while out on the road they provide refined performance with smooth acceleration and relaxed cruising speeds. The compact F2.8 engine recently upgraded for Euro VI applications opens up new possibilities for mini-coaches, both for van-based chassis and custom-designs.

Powering 2,000 hybrid buses in Europe

Cummins has achieved a Euro VI technology achievement by reaching a total of over 2,000 hybrid-adapted engine installations in buses operating across Europe, making a major contribution to reducing the carbon footprint. Cummins ‘H’ versions of the B4.5 and B6.7 are specially configured to integrate with the hybrid driveline and provide a seamless Stop/Start function for the vehicle.

The Cummins Euro VI four-cylinder B4.5-H and six-cylinder B6.7-H hybrid adapted engines can be found operating in cities across Europe, specified by bus manufacturers ADL, Wrightbus, VDL, Solaris, Van Hool, Vectia and Irizar.

Hybrid installations

Cummins hybrid installations extend from single-deck midi-buses to double- deck and articulated tram-buses. As the leading hybrid engine supplier in the European bus market, Cummins’ success is also replicated in the North American transit market where around 10 per cent of buses entering service are hybrids and virtually all powered by either the B6.7-H or L9-H.

Cummins' hybrid engine expertise has played a key role in helping many bus manufacturers on the road to electrification and has achieved remarkable results in terms of fuel savings, Euro VI-D emissions reduction and vehicle sociability. In terms of fleet decarbonisation, we typically see hybrid drive buses reducing fuel consumption and related CO2 emissions by around 33 per cent.

Cummins hybrid engines are fully optimized to be used within all hybrid drivetrains, including those supplied by Siemens, BAE Systems, Eaton and Allison. They are compatible with both series or parallel hybrid systems due to our unique capability to tailor engine systems to the needs of the application and closely collaborate with system suppliers.

With Cummins engines specifically developed to enhance hybrid system performance, this capability provides operators with the energy choice they need alongside conventional clean diesel drivelines, the option of renewable natural gas power and full-electric solutions from Cummins.

Streamlining the engine

The hybrid engine is streamlined by eliminating power-take-off accessories used to drive steering pumps, fan drives, air compressors and air-conditioning as they can be run directly from the electrical supply from the battery. The starter motor can also be removed, although this is retained in some buses as a back-up. Transferring the engine-driven accessory load of up to 60 kW (80 hp) to the hybrid system enables a more efficient energy delivery on demand compared to that of a conventional bus engine installation.

Natural Gas

Cummins L9N natural gas engine achieves close-to-zero emission levels for trucks and buses operating across Europe & Turkey. With the ability to run on either CNG or LNG, the 8.9-litre engine is a proven performer in Volvo and Renault trucks, and available from bus builders including Anadolu Isuzu, Autosan, BMC, Otokar, Solaris and Temsa. The L9N is fully compatible with operating on Biogas, also known as Renewable Natural Gas (RNG), replacing fossil-based natural gas with a sustainable fuel option to achieve the goal of fleet decarbonization. Find out about the clean, quiet running L9N with up to 239 kW (320 hp) output in our brochure here: L9 & L9N Euro VI engines.

Stop-Start Technology

The B4.5 and B6.7 Euro VI bus engines can incorporate Cummins unique Stop/Start technology, with the capability to eliminate almost all engine idling at bus stops, traffic lights and pedestrian crossings. The engine-off mode is automatically operated for typically 16 to 20 stops per operating hour, dependent on the route. The engine position sensor ensures instant readiness for a soft restart in just 0.5 seconds following the engine-off mode. The robust Stop/Start system is fully integral to the engine design and has proved popular with both double-deck and single-deck operations.

The Stop/Start function can achieve up to 8 percent fuel savings on city bus duty cycles, potentially saving over 2,000 litres of fuel annually with a corresponding saving of 5 metric tons of CO2 greenhouse gas per year to lower the carbon footprint of the vehicle. The bus emits zero emissions and zero-noise for an average of 8 minutes per operating hour when the engine-off phase is engaged, enhancing sociability in the vicinity for passengers and pedestrians.
