Today’s modern diesel engine is an impressive feat of innovation. Cummins Inc. is no stranger to innovation. In fact, the company spends $1 billion annually on research and technology across its product portfolio with 11,000 of the brightest engineers innovating for their customers. Today the company is taking a look at three of the innovations that have shaped the advanced diesel engines that are relied upon by so many different industries.
Switching to natural gas vehicles (NGVs) can be a great way for commercial vehicle fleets to save money. With lower fuel expenses and reduced maintenance costs on after-treatment systems, natural gas is an attractive and economical fuel choice for many applications. With over 30 years of experience designing and manufacturing natural gas engines for truck and bus applications, Cummins is the perfect partner for businesses and fleets looking to switch from diesel or gasoline.
As we enter the energy transition in the transportation industry, alternative power continues to emerge, many grounded on the technologies, designs and innovations of our existing power sources like diesel engines. Battery electric powertrains are increasingly popular, due to their zero emissions status, low upkeep costs and simplified maintenance, but not everyone is ready to switch to electric powertrains or advanced diesel powertrains.
What is a diesel engine's lifespan?
Diesel engines are robust machines that have longer lifespans than you might expect. The lifespan of an average diesel engine is anywhere from 400,000 miles to 1,000,000 miles, while the average lifespan of a gas engine is around 200,000 miles. Why is that? Diesel engines are designed differently from petrol engines, meaning they have more room within the engine for more oil to move freely. This allows the components of the engine to run longer at optimal levels.
Helps systematically diagnose complex engine and aftertreatment systems. Runs a dynamic self-test of these systems, creates a log and provides analysis to better guide diagnostics.
Enhanced engine protection feature incorporated into the upgraded engine ECM. Eliminates the need for an additional diagnostics module or Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) converter box.
Enables and manages software updates for Cummins products and features.
Fault finding analysis tool designed to work with Holset VGT™ Electric Actuators. Available exclusively to Authorized Holset Distributors.
