When Cummins authorized distributor Orient Energy Systems (OES) was approached by a new customer, Ahmad Jamal Textile Mills, the customer came with a requirement of 50 kVA for their home’s power needs and 200 kVA for their manufacturing unit. After meeting with the customer, OES brought in their in-house expert to evaluate the load. The application and project engineer determined that the load in fact required 100 kVA of power for the house and 160 kVA for the manufacturing operations.

OES supplied and installed 1 x Cummins C110D5 generator set and 1 x Cummins C175D5B generator set at the Ahmad Jamal Textile Mills owner’s home and business in Faisalabad, Pakistan, providing prime power to keep the business and household operating at all times. A custom-built enclosure from OES fulfilled noise level requirements of 80-85 dB(A).

On-time delivery was a key requirement of the customer, and this was met by OES and Cummins with timely delivery at the site as per the committed time line. The customer was afforded extra value and peace of mind through Cummins extended warranty program.

Experiencing a connected hospital - CumminsVisiting today’s modern hospitals could make you feel as if you are in a sci-fi movie. Robotic arms in operating rooms, beds with tracking sensors, and cognitive rooms featuring the IBM Watson platform1.

In fact, a study from Aruba Networks found that healthcare is the third most advanced in its implementation of Internet of Things (IoT)2. The study estimates that 60% of healthcare organizations globally have introduced IoT devices into their facilities. These IoT devices are commonly used for patient monitors, energy meters, X-rays and imaging devices. 

Hospitals are increasingly adapting connectivity to enhance quality of care and to improve their productivity. A key driver behind this increased adoption of connectivity and IoT devices is simply the aging population across the world. A United Nations study shows that world’s population above 60 years old has more than doubled since 1980, now exceeding 1 billion people3. The same study also forecasts that by 2050 the world will have more people at ages above 60 years old than adolescents and youth at ages 10-24.

A power outage in a hospital could not only shut down heating, cooling and lighting but also medical imaging, operating room equipment and life support devices. 

Unfortunately, hospitals are at risk of losing utility power due to unexpected reasons just like the rest of us. These unexpected reasons range from severe weather to equipment failure to wildlife. In Florida, during Hurricane Irma, 54 hospitals were operating using their back-up power systems according to Florida Hospitals Association4. This is about 20% of Florida’s 300+ hospitals. In California, an underground power line failure resulted in power outage affecting 1,700 customers including a local hospital with 173 beds5. In Virginia, a squirrel that got into the substation caused a power outage affecting the local community hospital for few hours6.

Today’s connected hospitals address the risk and consequences of losing utility power through different means. Use of remote monitoring for back-up power systems and deployment of emergency operations plans are two of the several ways to address the risk of losing utility power. National, state and local regulations also drive healthcare facilities to have backup power for life safety loads. 

Hospitals have sophisticated power systems featuring access both to utility power and reliable back-up power. Back-up power systems could include generator sets, uninterruptible power sources (UPS) and more. These systems are designed to power the hospital when the utility power outage occurs. Use of remote monitoring systems such as Cummins PowerCommand Cloud helps the Facilities Team to keep in touch with real-time information about hospitals’ power systems. These cloud-based systems enable users to check system status, identify faults, and access critical notifications, reducing hospitals’ operation and maintenance costs.

Hospitals also deploy emergency operations plans as a part of their overall emergency management protocol during a hazard. Emergency operations plans outline how the facility will respond to and recover from a hazard7. These plans could outline the facility’s procedures around communication, safety, security, staff responsibilities and clinical support activities while responding and recovering from a hazard.

UCEM Chimborazo is the second largest cement plant in Ecuador, currently producing around 1.6m tonnes of cement annually. When it came to fail-safe power supply for its new clinker line, Cummins was awarded the bid for this emergency power supply contract. 

With two existing utilities feeding all loads, a third option capable of managing all critical loads in an emergency situation was required. It was also vital that any new power supply connects to the existing hydroelectric plant to optimize capabilities.

Cummins global footprint came to light in this project, with the sale made by Cummins Spain and installation and commissioning carried out in Ecuador. Installation of the Cummins 1250DQGAE generator set was a challenge due to the cement plant’s location more than 3,000 m above sea level, but Cummins’ expertise and extensive experience overcame the environmental obstacles. The generator set was housed in an 82 dB(A) soundproof container, and the Cummins technical team countered the dry environment with a customized solution to protect the equipment and ensure adequate airflow.

In rural parts of Oman where there is no connection to the grid, villages rely entirely on the local power station, where Cummins generator sets run 24/7 in continuous operation. During winter, the load on the plant is minimal as there is less cooling required. However, with summer approaching, the load will increase and power requirement will thus be critical. 

With a need to upgrade the existing Dhafrat Power Station in Al Wusta Governorate, which covers the central region of Oman, the main contractor for the project, M/s. Global Chemical and Maintenance LLC, turned to Cummins and its authorized distributor, Universal Engineering Services (UES). UES has supplied around 120 Cummins generators to this customer, with current installed prime power capacity at 80 MW.

Cummins generators provide prime power for rural village in Oman.The Cummins prime power systems – 3 x C1400D5 units rated at 1 MW and 1 x C1100D5 unit rated at 500 kW – are using their time-tested paralleling and load share controls to meet the local power needs of the village without any interruption, providing 3.5 MW of total power output. The 1 MW units were engineered to order with medium-voltage alternators as the requirement called for an 11,000-volt unit, and work together in parallel, while the 500 kW unit is synchronized using a step-up transformer. The cooling system requirement meets harsh conditions of ambient temperature of 55°C and nearly 100% humidity, and noise levels of 85 dBA at 1 m are also met by the Cummins solution.

Cummins global footprint and local support gave the customer access to one of the most capable networks in the industry for their critical infrastructure upgrade – from product capability and market-competitive pricing through a robust supply chain and manufacturing process, to confidence in the technical support capability and aftermarket support. Built-in paralleling and load share controls were a key advantage compared to other generator suppliers, which usually offer a separate standalone paralleling and load share control.
