Santa’s Sleigh Repowered with Cummins this Christmas
North Pole engineers say Santa Claus will make his annual rounds in record time this year thanks to a newly repowered sleigh. The sleigh’s factory nine reindeer power plant was recently upgraded to 160 horses, thanks to a brand new Cummins R2.8 Turbo Diesel crate engine.
Workshop spokeself Jeremy Tinsel says convincing the big guy was the hardest part of the transition. “You know, Nick, he’s kind of traditional, so he was reluctant at first. Then, we showed him the power curve. When he saw 267 pound-feet of torque at 1600-3200 rpm, he was sold.”
Santa’s elves went straight to work. Generally, with the right equipment and a little know-how, even a shade tree mechanic can accomplish a Cummins repower. Of course, this particular project presented more challenges than most. Converting from magical caribou power to a clean diesel engine admittedly required some finesse. Still, in little time, the elves had everything up and running.
Early test runs with the repowered sleigh produced outstanding results. On average, sleigh speed increased 23% and fuel economy improved by 39%. (The latter statistic requiring a really complex sequence of equations to convert reindeer feed to diesel fuel.) Replacing nine 700-pound reindeer with a single 503-pound Turbo Diesel engine also dramatically increased Santa’s gift hauling capacity.
And, speaking of the reindeer, don’t worry about them. Free of their sleigh pulling responsibilities, they are currently enjoying a well-deserved vacation at a theme park in sunny Orlando, Florida – one of the few places talking reindeer can wander around without drawing too much attention.
As Cummins first direct-to-consumer crate engine, the R2.8 Turbo Diesel has lots of people considering repower projects. Enthusiasts can sign up to be notified when the R2.8 is available in early 2017.
So, if you plan to keep watch for Santa this year, expect him a little earlier than usual. He’ll be the jolly, white-bearded fellow in the shiny, red sleigh with the Cummins logo stamped on the side.
