Charley Barth joined Cummins with the goal of moving the power leader closer to a paperless company. So you can imagine how he felt upon discovering Cummins had not a few hundred boxes of paper in storage, but a few thousand – as many as 6,000 just in North America.
“It was a little discouraging, but I knew with the right team we could get that under control,” said Barth, Cummins’ Global Director of Enterprise Content Management (ECM) for the past two years. “I’m really proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish in a relatively short period of time.”
The Cummins locomotive recorded a 16 percent improvement in fuel economy compared to the engine it replaced, an 89 percent reduction in oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and a 98 percent cut in particulate matter (PM).
What some call the company’s “mobile locomotive testing lab,” also demonstrated over 12 months that it has plenty of muscle, too.
“It pulls better than anything else we have here in terms of an engine 4,300 to 4,400 (horsepower),” said Bob Babcock, Senior Vice President of Operations and Business Development for the Indiana Rail Road.
So what do Americans like you do with $3,000 or so burning a hole in their pocket? You might think they go on a shopping spree or book a vacation, but Americans are actually quite practical with that extra money. Most use the money to pay off debt or they put that money towards a savings account, such as retirement savings.
Here's another practical way to use that extra money that can benefit you in the long run--invest in your home. Your home is likely one of your biggest investments. Why not take an extra couple thousands dollars and reinvest it this way?
The event featured a group of ambitious entrepreneurs, each ready to make their pitch to a panel of business leaders with a lot on the line. But this wasn’t a television show. It was the Cummins Environmental Gateway project.
Cummins leaders in the U.K. invited suppliers in to pitch new ideas that could help the company reach its goals for reducing water and energy use and producing less waste. The result was more than 100 submissions, 28 finalists and 12 winning ideas that will now be tested at Cummins’ sites around the country.
Thankfully, Spring is finally here! Our landscape will gradually change from brown to green and will fill with pops of color from various flowers blooming once again. We’ll open our windows to let in fresh air and go out on walks to overload our senses with all that comes with Spring. However, as the snow melts and temperatures climb, we have to remember that Spring also brings severe storms.
In some ways, the cave at the Cummins Technical Center (CTC) in Columbus, Indiana (USA) is aptly named. Tucked away in the basement and dark much of the time, its inhabitants seem to prefer large, dark glasses, even when the lights are dim.
But some pretty high tech stuff is happening in the CAVE and at similar locations across Cummins where engineers are using virtual reality to get a one-to-one perspective on engines and components, often before anything is built.
First quarter revenues of $4.6 billion increased 7 percent from the same quarter in 2016. Stronger demand from construction and mining customers and higher sales from a distributor acquisition in the fourth quarter of last year, more than offset the impact of weaker truck production in North America. Currency negatively impacted revenues by approximately 1 percent compared to last year, primarily due to a stronger US dollar. International sales improved by 17 percent primarily due to growth in China and Europe while revenues in North America increased 1 percent.
The new Guidanz mobile app is making long processes faster by quickly assessing engine status.
It’s another example of how technology is changing not just diesel engines, but the way they are serviced. Here’s how the new app is getting customers back to work faster:
It’s almost that time of the year again. Hurricane season begins on June 1st and lasts until November 30th.
Colorado State scientists recently issued their initial hurricane season prediction for the Atlantic Basin, forecasting 11 named storms, including four hurricanes and two major hurricanes. While the prediction for the 2017 hurricane season is slightly below average due to El Niño, remember that it only takes ONE tropical cyclone to impact millions of people.
Engineers Mahesh Yanamandram and Tom McKinley work with heavy-duty truck engines at Cummins. So designing engines made of cardboard, bottle caps, rubber bands and straws was a little different for them.
But talking trucks are cool whether it’s an 18-wheeler heading down the highway or a kid’s STEM challenge built around the kitchen table. It didn’t take long for the two men to agree it was the perfect idea for a Cummins-themed challenge on the popular website CurriosityMachine.org.
