High-speed ferries need powerful engines day-in and day-out
With high-transit networks converging on both sides, ferries built for high-speed travel must be well-built, stout and powerful.
As a super volume commuter service for tourism operations, the vessel layout, speed, seakeeping ability and interior must be optimized for the mission.
Such is the case of M/V Grey Lady IV, a 151-foot aluminum catamaran ferry built by Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding in 2016. Operated by Hy-Line Cruises, she plies the waters of Nantucket Sound throughout the year.
On Friday, April 22, more than 100 students from Central Middle School and CSA Lincoln Elementary in Columbus, IN met with Cummins engineers around a 2020 Blue Bird All American Electric Type D School Bus, with an 84-passenger capacity; a Kenworth T680 with a Cummins ISX12N near-zero emissions natural gas engine; and a 2021 Freightliner Cascadia Semi running on a Cummins X15 Efficiency diesel engine. The lesson of the day was climate change, Destination Zero, and the important role that technology can play in reducing emissions.
News of the X15N has since generated significant interest and excitement in the North American heavy-duty truck market. So much so it was named one of the Top 20 New Products of 2022 by Heavy Duty Trucking (HDT).
Long-term power outages can be both inconvenient and expensive, disrupting your family’s comfort and safety. While every power outage is different for each homeowner, costs can add up to a surprisingly large amount. Plus, if you work from home or have a home business, in addition to any physical damages, you may have to endure the cost of lost work, productivity or wages.

The Love’s Family of Companies, and Cummins Inc. (NYSE: CMI) recently agreed to work together to help customers use alternative fuel and zero emission technologies. Trillium, a leading provider of renewable and alternative fueling solutions, will take the driver’s seat at Love’s in the development and deployment of strategies to support this initiative.
Reducing air pollution generated by commercial vehicles is one of the many benefits of natural gas engines. Nested in a valley in the French Alps, the town of Chamonix is known for breathtaking vistas of Mont Blanc, for being the birthplace of modern mountaineering, and, unfortunately, for its terrible air quality. Emissions from passing vehicles are to blame. The town sits by a major road tunnel used by more than a half million heavy vehicles, every year.
Commercial vehicle fleet managers face a dizzying array of options when it is time to replace or upgrade vehicles. One question that fleet managers often ask is whether there are any good fuel options available to their business besides diesel or gasoline. Alternative fuels, including natural gas, have grown in popularity in recent years due to their broad appeal. Considering a full or partial switch to an alternative fuel is more often than not a question worth asking.
What’s next? For most people, it’s simply a question. For Chitra Bhagat, however, it’s her passion and her job description. Chitra currently serves as Solutions and Technology Leader for the analytics organization. “I sit under the analytics and artificial intelligence group. It’s kind of a niche area in data. These days everyone is talking about artificial intelligence, machine learning, smart data, making the data work for us, insights, things like that. I work with and lead a small team which is responsible for implementing the analytics solutions for the company.”
When it comes to natural gas engines, there are a range of frequently asked questions about the cost, practicality, and feasibility of integrating natural gas into commercial fleets. There are certainly preparations that need to be considered, but the learning curve to implement natural gas engines is not as steep as people may think, especially in comparison to the benefits of natural gas in transportation applications.
