Testing is expected to begin soon on natural gas powered fuel cells at the Microsoft-Cummins Advanced Energy Lab in Seattle, Washington (U.S.A.). The 20-rack environment in the lab seeks to simulate datacenter conditions to allow the evaluation of new technologies, which have the potential to improve efficiency, reduce emissions and decrease the costs associated with datacenter operations. If the fuel cell concept is successful, it has the potential to greatly simplify datacenter power architecture, potentially doubling efficiency while reducing costs and improving reliability.

The litigation related to Rotomaster's infringement of Cummins' turbocharger patents in the U.S. and overseas. Under the terms of the settlement, Rotomaster shall cease producing infringing products in any countries where Cummins has valid patent rights and will cease infringing activities in the United States. Rotomaster acknowledged that Cummins' patents are valid and enforceable and that Rotomaster infringed the patents.

Cummins released its water conservation goal in 2014 as part of its 2020 Environmental Sustainability Plan, pledging to reduce water use intensity by 33 percent, adjusted by labor hours. As of the third quarter of 2016, the company's water efficiency efforts had resulted in a 42 percent intensity reduction or 18 percent on an absolute basis. Because the Company achieved the initial goal ahead of schedule, it revised its goal to be more aggressive.
