As delegates in Paris discuss reducing carbon emissions, Cummins is working with countries in emerging markets around the world to help them get the power they need while reducing emissions in a way that builds economic wealth.

Cummins employees are always working on interesting, creative and impactful projects in a variety of areas. Here’s a quick update on five that have been in the news: 1. Corporate Responsibility Padarwadi This Corporate Responsibility initiative in India brought power in 2011 to a small, rural village about 150 kilometers from the city of Pune. Some five years later, the project is still going strong.

Making people’s lives better by unleashing the Power of Cummins may seem like a simple statement but it’s what guides 54,000 Cummins employees. Today, Cummins engineers are working together to build a brighter future through a lightweight engine that produces zero emissions. Although the engine does not work, employees are using it to turbocharge the minds of aspiring engineers.

To see how important fuel economy is to Cummins’ Amol Wairagade and his team in Pune, India, one only has to look at their extensive “project hopper.” The list of initiatives the team wants to tackle over the next few years includes 24 projects related to helping customers get better fuel economy. The ideas range from developing stop-start technology for bus customers to creating a fuel economy switch that enables heavy-duty truck drivers to easily change to a fuel efficiency setting.

Leaders at the first four Cummins sites certified by the company as “Zero Disposal” facilities say slow but steady progress that builds employee support for reuse and recycling was critical to their success. “Do not try to boil the ocean,” said Jennifer Hirst, a facilities engineer at one of the sites, Cummins Turbo Technologies (CTT) at Huddersfield in the United Kingdom. “Small, individual steps will slowly amalgamate into a big difference and change in culture.”
