Cummins is establishing new goals to address two of the Company’s biggest environmental opportunities, improved efficiency of our products in use and more efficient logistics within Cummins’ own operations. The new goals are in addition to the goals the Company set publicly for waste, water and energy in 2014. Cummins’ Action Committee for Environmental Sustainability (ACES) has been working on the new goals for the past year, which are timed to 2020. Here’s a look at the new goals:

Water is a fundamental need for health, sanitation, agriculture and economic prosperity, yet just a few years ago, the people of Nandal Village near the Cummins Megasite in Phaltan, India did not have a reliable supply of water to live healthy, productive lives.

Cummins is looking for model K or L engines, and we need your help finding them. The Cummins Archive team was recently contacted by a United States National Park Service volunteer. The Park Service is in the process of restoring Battery Townsley at the entrance to San Francisco Bay. This battery, equipped with a pair of 16-inch guns, once guarded the entrance to the strategic waterway, and is now a historic site and popular visitor attraction. Electrical power for the entire site was provided by three Cummins Model L engines and one Model H.

“I don’t believe a true picture of a Company’s sustainability can be told just in numbers or just as a narrative,” said Blair Claflin, Director of Sustainability Communications at Cummins. “My hope is that this report strikes the right balance. I think we have a good story to tell and the numbers to back it up.” Cummins announced new goals for environmental sustainability for its products in use and its internal logistics...

Of all the Cummins race cars, none is as well-traveled as the 1931 No. 8 Cummins Diesel. From the famous Indianapolis speedway to a tour round the world, the No. 8 car was the model for efficiency and reliability. Cummins founder Clessie Cummins originally installed his 4-cylinder model U engine in a Duesenberg chassis and in February 1931, drove it to Daytona Beach and set a new diesel speed record averaging 100.755 miles per hour (mph).

Unfortunately, parts of the coast are often scattered with trash, debris and other environmentally harmful objects. This debris can pose serious risks to ocean wildlife. Fishing line, plastic bags and strapping bands can hamper the mobility of marine life and cause injury. Sea turtles often mistake plastic bags for jellyfish, one of their favorite foods.
