Rebuilding high horsepower engines is an inherently “green” activity, potentially tripling the life of an engine. The Distribution Business Unit’s High Horsepower Master Rebuild Center in Dubai, however, doesn’t stop there in practicing good environmental stewardship.

There was no brass band or wild applause when the doors to Cummins’ Acoustical Testing Center (ATC) first swung open to the public last fall. Instead, visitors were greeted by silence. Silence is precisely the point of the Company’s new sound-testing facility in Fridley, Minn., built next to the Cummins Power Generation (CPG) plant. With its curved roof and sound-absorbing acoustical wedges lining the walls and ceiling, the distinctive-looking center is the largest facility of its kind in the industry.

At certain times, the donations of clothing and household goods would come in so fast to the Sans Souci community thrift store in Columbus, Ind. that stacks of bags and boxes would extend nearly to the ceiling of the shop’s warehouse. “We would get hit with a lot of donations and we couldn’t process them fast enough,” said Sheryl Adams, executive director of the not-for-profit. “It was like a bottleneck at all times.”

When Cummins decided to expand its operations in Africa in 2010, it made sure Corporate Responsibility was included in the planning. The results are already paying off. Over the past year, Cummins employees helped a leprosarium in Ghana. In South Africa, they revitalized parklands in Johannesburg, cleaned beaches in Cape Town and sponsored a blood drive in Kelvin. Solar savings The five solar arrays installed at Cummins’ facilities amount to a significant step forward in energy efficiency for the Company.
