The man who turned vision into reality

W.G Irwin

Cummins is often defined by the name of its founder, Clessie Cummins, but without William Glanton Irwin, the company might never have existed.

A Columbus, Indiana banker and industrialist, Irwin provided the financial backing and business oversight that allowed Cummins’ engineering vision to take shape. Years before the company’s founding, their partnership began. In 1908, Irwin hired Cummins as a chauffeur and mechanic, quickly recognizing his talent. By supporting his early engine work, Irwin helped lay the foundation for what would become Cummins Engine Company in 1919.

From the start, Irwin served as the company’s primary investor and business head. As Cummins focused on developing diesel technology, Irwin ensured the business could survive. This critical balance depended on both roles. Irwin’s willingness to continue funding the operation during years of uncertainty reflected not only his belief in the technology but also his commitment to Cummins.

Irwin’s support came with a practical, results-driven mindset. During the early years of the Great Depression, as sales declined sharply, Irwin pushed for hard decisions. At one point, he urged that the company be shut down. This pressure forced Clessie and the company to innovate. In response, Clessie and his team pursued bold demonstrations of diesel efficiency that helped restore confidence in the business and justify continued investment.

Irwin’s role highlights the essential partnership at the heart of Cummins’ early history. Clessie’s innovation and technical vision and Irwin’s financial discipline and strategic restraint came together to found a company that would last for over 100 years. Their combined strengths created the conditions necessary for survival.

Though less publicly recognized, Irwin’s contributions were essential to the formation of Cummins Engine Company. He recognized Clessie’s potential and accepted the risks involved in building something new.
