History

From our founding in 1919 to the early 1930s – with the company earning no profits during that time – values came to define Cummins. The company endured because our founders, William Irwin and Clessie Cummins, committed to a purpose beyond money: They focused on quality, dependability and the community.

That focus remained when J. Irwin Miller became CEO in 1934. Miller brought Cummins its first profitable year and led the company through a tumultuous time in the late 1930s when manufacturers were resisting, sometimes violently, employees’ attempts at unionization. Miller refused to join such actions and chose to work with the unions, strengthening Cummins’ reputation as a company committed to others.

In 1954, Miller codified the company’s values, beliefs and principles in the creation of the Cummins Foundation, one of the world’s first corporate philanthropic institutions. Miller formalized Cummins’ community engagement in 1972 through the establishment of Corporate Responsibility.

Education: Improving the quality and alignment of educational systems to ensure the students of today are ready for the workforce of tomorrow.

Environment: Ensuring everything we do leads to a cleaner, healthier and safer environment.

Social Justice/Equality of Opportunity: Increasing opportunity and equity for those most in need.

As shown in the photo at the top of the page, Wang Jie, a Senior Administration Assistant at Cummins Turbo Technologies in Wuxi, China, created a safer work environment for people with disabilities, helping them to lead more independent lives.
