COLUMBUS, Ind. – Cummins Inc. (NYSE:CMI) today recognized employees who developed innovative technologies that enable cleaner diesel engine solutions for customers of Cummins with the prestigious 2009 Dr. Julius P. Perr Innovation Award.

In all, six employees developed key patented inventions that have had a significant impact on the Company, the industry and the environment. Their work exemplifies the spirit of the late Dr. Perr, who was responsible for many of the foundational innovations that have made Cummins a leader in diesel technology.

Wayne Eckerle, Donald Stanton and Francois Ntone, all of whom work at the Cummins Technical Center in Columbus, were recognized with the award for developing an internal combustion engine that produced low emissions. John F. Parker, John M. Mulloy and Sam Pringle won the award for modifying the variable geometry turbocharger to manage not only airflow but the exhaust gas temperature. Parker works at Huddersfield in the United Kingdom and Mulloy and Pringle are located at the Cummins Technical Center.

“Cummins is a leader in developing technologies that both meet the needs of our customers and lead to a cleaner environment,” said John Wall, Cummins Vice President and Chief Technical Officer. “The work of these engineers exemplifies the kind of innovation that Cummins encourages. This is what we call ‘Innovation You Can Depend On.’”

Eckerle, Stanton and Ntone were challenged to develop a combustion system that would reduce the amount of nitrous oxide (NOx) released into the air while controlling the amount of particulate matter and protecting fuel consumption. Their invention reduced the oxygen available to the fuel, slowing the heat release and reducing the combustion temperatures. As a result, the production of NOx was reduced with a technology that can be used in a range of engines.

Parker, Mulloy and Pringle were recognized for four patents related to the function of the variable geometry turbocharger (VGT), which helps control air flow into the engines and enables Cummins to meet stringent emissions requirements. The engineers modified the VGT to manage air flow and exhaust gas temperature - which is necessary for thermal management of the aftertreatment systems used on diesel engines since 2007.  The modified VGT has resulted in more than $20 million in cost savings since the beginning of 2007.

“There is a wealth of innovation inside the worldwide technical communities of Cummins and these inventions are just a sampling of the kinds of innovative technologies we deliver to our customers,” said J. Bruce Schelkopf, Cummins Chief Global Intellectual Property Counsel.

This prestigious award was created to honor of Dr. Perr, who was named as the inventor or co-inventor on 80 U.S. patents. Dr. Perr, who died in 2005, joined Cummins in 1958 after fleeing Communist Hungary.
